#WINDIRSTAT UNKNOWN FILES WINDOWS#
I don't know what to look for with treemap.Īlso, arnesacnussem, what folder are you talking about? I don't know where the unknown space is, just that it's somewhere on the drive and takes up space detectable by even windows explorer, but it can't show it.ĮDIT2: Ok I tried spacesniffer as well, turned on its data streams and unknown space, but it too doesn't see anything strange like treemap, because it only shows the real size and not size on disk. Anyway, I'm currently looking at it but I don't see anything strange on treemap, definitely nothing obvious like UNKNOWN in windirstat and the total space taken up according to treemap corresponds to what windows explorer shows.

At first I thought it only happened with mp4 and mkv files, since it happened again when I copied one of the problem files to G and compressed it there, cause G has never had this problem before, but it did with an mp4 file.Īfter that I moved the file back and tried compressing another game like I have been on drive G, but the same problem started happening there on game files as well and not just video files like I initially thought.Īlso I just now tried treemap and I don't see any unknown entities like in windirstat in F, however it does detect a few more folders than windows explorer and 2 more files, no idea which those are though.ĮDIT: I tried it on G as well, somehow treemap is much faster than windirstat, but sees only the real size and not size on disk.

I used windirstat to scan G: drive, which hasn't had problems with this as far as I know, and I found out that it too has an unknown entity of 102GB! I have no idea where it came from, since any compressed space was instantly added to the total free space I have remaining on the drive, but that unknown entity isn't a mistake, when I add up all my root folders in G (as detected by windirstat) AND that unknown entity it adds up to how much space is taken according to the drive's properties. Also I tried something else just now that brought about some interesting results and weird results. Now there's no more Unknown disk space hogger.I tried that vssadmin command but nothing shows up. Reformatting the hard disk and reinstalling WinXP fixed the problem.

I wasn't able to find out what actually was the "Unknown" disk space gobbler and finally I just ask if it's ok to just reformat his PC to get rid of the "Unknown" disk space (I couldn't find a way to delete it since it doesn't seem to belong to a file handle or the like). I also used CHKDSK thrice - inside WinXP and using CHKDSK /F which checks the disk upon rebooting the PC and also I booted up from a WinXP Boot CD (Recovery Console) and run CHKDSK - the hard disk checks out fine and there's no inkling that the "unknown" hard disk space are lost clusters that are waiting to be assigned to files. Now that leaves 38Gb mystery "Unknown" disk space. It shows that "System Volume Information" uses nearly 1Gb of space in WinDirStat. Now, the "Unknown" disk space clears a bit. A thought came to me and I used the "Show hidden files" and also I attempted sharing the "System Volume Information" which is usually not accessible by most programs. I'm wondering, what is this "Unknown" that gobbled up 39Gb disk space? I asked if he ever installed any Linux partition or the like (but he isn't that computer-savvy and would unlikely have ever installed or have a copy of Linux around that might be the missing unknown disk space). Now where did the missing 39Gb space go?įortunately there's also a "Show space used by Unknown" option in WinDirStat and Lo and behold, 39Gb is used by "Unknown". So 149Gb total hard disk space less 10Gb total files usage space should equal to 139Gb free space. And indeed WinDirStat shows that the total of all the files installed uses only 10Gb disk space. To find out more about the mystery of the missing disk space, I fired up WinDirStat (Windows Directory Statistics freeware utility) to show a tree map of the actual files that get used. But 39Gb is missing, leaving around 100Gb disk space free. Then I check the Drive C Properties (he's using WinXP only) and indeed it says 10Gb is the total of the files being used (Windows + Programs, etc). I check his hard disk which is 160Gb formatted as a single NTFS partition (ie. He asked me why is his hard disk space suddenly drop a lot. He informed me that he just newly installed WinXP on the PC and also installed his usual softwares (YM, Warcraft 3 and a few other programs). A friend's younger brother let me check his PC.
